Abstract

In Philosophical Investigations §321 there is a parenthetical remark that simply reads “Posture”. In this talk I consider the significance of this remark in the context of Wittgenstein’s later philosophy. 321 draws an explicit analogy between proprioceptive self-awareness and a dawning understanding of the solution to a problem, for instance, knowing how to go on in the completion of an arithmetical sequence. This crossing of psychological and logical problems is characteristic of Wittgenstein’s later texts. By considering in more detail the concept of posture and its relation to observation and description, I attempt to clarify how Wittgenstein understands the relation between psychology and logic.
